Compensation
$20–$30 per hour depending on experience, plus California sick leave (1 hour accrued for every 30 hours worked).
Flexible schedule averaging 10 - 15 hours per week. This position begins immediately.
Length of Position
Ongoing, part-time. Hours may vary depending on seasonal programming, workshops, and residency activity.
Job Summary
Yucca Valley Material Lab (YVML) is an artist-run nonprofit located in the rural high desert community of Yucca Mesa. The Studio Manager supports the daily operations, safety, and maintenance of YVML’s studio facilities, tools, and equipment.
This role focuses on facility upkeep, equipment maintenance, and studio organization to ensure artists, residents, instructors, and visitors can work safely and productively. The position also includes occasional in-town errands for supplies, materials, and tool servicing.
Key Responsibilities
Facility & Equipment Maintenance
Perform routine inspections and upkeep of studio spaces, equipment, tools, and furniture.
Conduct minor repairs and basic fabrication as needed (e.g., simple furniture, shelving, or storage solutions). Escalate larger repairs or technical issues to the Director.
Maintain and service specialized equipment including:
Glass kilns, casting tools, and coldworking equipment (sandblaster, diamond lap wheel, tile saw)
Welding equipment and associated tools
Digital fabrication equipment (3D printers, laser cutter)
Paper-making equipment (pulper, beater)
Track repair needs, schedule servicing, and maintain equipment logs.
Ensure tools and workspaces remain clean, safe, and well organized for participant use.
Studio & Lodging Maintenance
Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and organization across all studio spaces and artist lodging areas.
Prepare studios and lodging before and after workshops, residencies, and public programs. Responsibilities may include resetting workspaces, laundering linens as needed, removing waste, and restocking basic supplies.
Monitor facility cleanliness and report deeper maintenance needs to the Director.
Restock essential shop supplies in coordination with the Program Coordinator.
Facility Support & Errands
Support studio readiness before and after workshops and residencies.
Conduct in-town errands such as hardware and supply pick-ups, equipment servicing, or material deliveries.
Maintain organized storage and labeling of materials, supplies, and tools.
Ensure safe working conditions, including clear pathways, proper ventilation, and adherence to shop safety practices.
Administrative & Team Collaboration
Work closely with the Director, Program Coordinator, and teaching artists to support smooth workshop and residency operations.
Maintain records related to repairs, warranties, and maintenance schedules.
Contribute to updates and improvements to the Studio Manager Handbook.
Qualifications
Previous experience in studio management, fabrication shops, facilities maintenance, or similar environments preferred.
Ability to perform basic repair and maintenance of tools, machinery, and studio equipment.
Comfort troubleshooting both analog and digital tools.
Highly organized, reliable, and self-directed with strong attention to detail.
Comfortable working in a collaborative, community-oriented nonprofit environment.
Valid driver’s license and ability to complete in-town errands.
Knowledge of, or interest in, visual art, craft, or material-based practices strongly preferred.
